Victor Pasovisty

1930 - 2001. 


Victor Pasowisty was born on June 10th, 1930 at Elk Ranch, Manitoba. By the age of 9, Victor learned the basics of fiddling. He started playing house parties, weddings and schoolhouse dances at a very young age. 


Victor was gifted with not only the violin, but the guitar as well.


In 1955 at Shelburne ON Victor entered a violin contest and won accepting the honour of becoming North America's “Fiddling Champion”. Later, Victor appeared on the Country Hoedown Show with King Ganam on CBC TV. He also played with various bands in the Toronto area. 

In 1962, Victor recorded 4 Ukrainian albums for Arc Records. As life progressed, he was asked to appear on the Don Messer TV show. 

Two years later, Victor signed with RCA and recorded three more Ukrainian albums. By 1966, Victor taught violin full time. Over the years, she taught approximately 500 students. 

From 1975 to 1980 he was a member of this Ottawa Symphony Orchestra

During the 1970s, he recorded three more albums for Galaxy Records. In 1985, Victor joined the Jamboree Reunion Band which he associated himself with people like Tommy Hunter, Gordie Tapp, Myrna Lorrie and Stompin’ Tom Connors. 

In 1988, Victor recorded the first of two albums for Radio Records and assisted in production of 14 albums as Co-producer and backup musician.

Canadian fiddler, Victor Pasovisty was born in Mountain Road, Manitoba, and his parents are of Ukrainian and Polish descent. Victor started on the violin at the age of 12, playing by ear. It was in 1955 that he began studies with the late Professor Brondus Farmer.


During the period from 1944 to 1947, Victor attended St. Josephs College in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and was a member of the school group which consisted of a male and female choir and instrumental group which appeared on CJCX Radio for three years and was the most popular Ukrainian show on the air at the time.


la 1955 Victor Pasowisty won the Canadian Old Time Fiddling Championship at Shelburne, Ontario, and is the only contestant in the history of the contest to be a finalist in this popular annual event five times.


When the popular Television program Country Hoedown began several years ago, Victor was selected as the special guest for the first two shows and was also invited to the Ottawa Exhibition the same year to perform his old time fiddling artistry. Victor has also won the old time fiddling contest at the Canadian National Exhibition.
