2010 UMA Hall of Fame Inductee

John Barteski was born August 26, 1921 on a farm near Hazel Dell, Saskatchewan.  Music played an important part in his family.  John got his accordion at the age of five.  He learnt to play the violin at the age of ten.  He began playing at house parties and barn dances with his sister, Mary on the guitar, and brother Mike on the banjo, making up a three piece band "The Barteski's"

On November 3, 1942, John married Rose Wionzek and they moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba.  There he played with verious pickup bands.  John returned to Invermay, Sask. to farm, and continued his music career.  In 1947 John and Rose moved to Edmonton.  Together they raised three sons, Richard, Ron and Jim.

In 1958 he formed the original five piece Northern Troubadours Ukrainian Show and Dance Band.  He played at countless weddings, anniversaries, private functions, Edmonton Klondike days and at many other events in the Edmonton area.

Finally in 1963 John recorded his first vinyl LP as the professional 'Northern Troubadours'.  His half time entertainment was his impersonation of Dr. Sheevarka.  As technology progressed so did his music.  He made a total of five LP's, six Cassettes and later two CD's.

After twenty-seven years, in 1984 the band disbanded.  John continued to entertain at seniors lodges.

In June 1989 CFCW inducted John in recognition of his contribution to Canadian Ukrainian Music.  Their music is important to Canadian Heritage and it is important that this heritage is not lost.

John passed away July 12, 2006 and his music is alive and lives on.
