Mary (Munrosych) Chornick 

February 4, 1911 - September 14, 1985


Mary was a legendary Ukrainian Musician, she played mandolin and sang traditional songs.


Mary Chornick was born in Nazarinia, Ukraine on February 4, 1911 and in May of that year she came to Canada with her parents and they settled in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. She was the eldest of six girls. Mary and her three sisters, known as the “Harmony Sisters” played their instruments and sang songs during intermission at the local movie theatre. They entertained at different functions around Manitoba.  Mary Chornick’s Ukrainian Mandolin Melodies includes some of her most popular pieces, Bublichki (Bubbles), Harry Don’t Go Dancing, Jealous Neighbors, Bandura Song, Kozak and many more, Mary loved her music with a passion. Mary’s short but fulfilling life was taken by cancer September 14, 1985. Her music lives on and her ardent fans will always remember her “Mandolin Melodies”.
