Mae Chwaluk (Karasevich)

1917-2012

Music and song were a vital part of her life. It all started when she attended Oakburn School, where she yodeled at a concert. At age of 10, she became a member of the Canadian Ukrainian Youth Association and for the next 20 years participated in Song and Dance with this organization. During the period she learned harmony with her sisters and brother. Their farmyard strived on music and song.

During this time, she sang with the church choir an became a senior leader in Youth Club. Here she taught song and dance to the youth.  While at home on the farm her family also strived on music with her husband Tony playing the violin and her sons Taras and William playing accordion and cymbaly. Her daughters, Martha and Joan sang with her.

May recorded songs and humorous lyrics with various bands and even toured Western Canada with some of them. Her recordings made it possible to preserve many Ukrainian songs in time. Even in her Golden Years, May still sang whenever whenever an occasion presented itself. Music and song was a vital part of her life, and it will remain with us for years to come.

1917 - 2012.  Mae Chwaluk sang and recorded with Jim Gregrash, Tommy Buick and Mike Berehulka.
