2003 UMA Hall of Fame Inductee

Steve was raised in Gypsumville, Manitoba. He learned to play the violin at a very young age from his father and his grandfather. It was in Gypsumville that he formed his first band.

In 1947, Steve and his family moved to Winnipeg, MB where he formed “The Melody Makers” in 1948. The group was very popular Ukrainian band for weddings, barn dances and parties. In later years, Steve earned a new name, Trapper Steve, which was known by many.

His son, Albert, eventually joined the band. The orchestra recorded 78’s, 45’s as well as albums under the V-Records and Regis record label.

The group was often featured on the local radio station, “Songs of the Ukraine” sponsored by Direct Furniture on Winnipeg 's Selkirk Ave. They also participated in many “Talent Nights” in the local hotels.

The band played until Steve's retirement in 1971.

Steve Burkowski, a true pioneer of Ukrainian music.
